Borodash, a four-mile walk/run in historic Murfreesboro, TN, chose Greenhouse Ministries as one of its charities for its inaugural Thanksgiving Day race.

On race day, Borodash will collect canned goods and gently-used running shoes for a local charity.

June has come and gone, and the warm summer days of July have taken its place. The 5K Run and Golf Tournament were a great success, and we are truly grateful for the support the community gave us for them both. The events will help us to further our programs here at Greenhouse Ministries so that we can better serve others.

This month, we are having a major food drive to restock our food pantry. Previously called the "Generosity in Motion Food Drive," the drive will enable us to help so many families and people in Murfreesboro. With so many people out of work and unable to support their families alone, the food pantry program is more vital than ever.

On July 23rd, we will be having an all day food drive. You can drop off food at Greenhouse Ministries, 410 W. Lytle Street, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and volunteers will be on hand to bring the food into the building. Also, if needed, you will be given a donation form for tax purposes. The food drive will be broadcast continuously all day on Moody Radio, so tune in to listen to our progress!

We need dry goods such as macaroni and cheese, cereals, oatmeal and pasta, and canned goods like meat, fruit and vegetables. All goods need to be non-perishable.

When you drop off a bag of food, you are doing more than feeding a person. You are helping to give them the hope to sustain their lives and keep going, to not give up. So stop by Greenhouse Ministries on July 23rd, and help us to plant HOPE in the 'Boro!

5K Run SATURDAY!!!!

This weekend is the 2nd Annual "Planting HOPE in the 'Boro" 5K run, and everything has come together so well. Today, we had a fantastic volunteer group stop by to help us stuff the bags for the runners.

We got our t-shirts from The Very Idea and they look fantastic! We've also had about 61 people signed up as of today, and while that number isn't quite our goal of 250, it is still a good number, and we are very grateful for them. We also are very grateful for all of our prize donors this year.

With the economy still in a turn for the worse, we understand that businesses are low on funds, and that makes their generosity appreciated that much more. Without our business partners, we could not make the 5k a success.

So to all the runners and our business partners, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

It is now the month of June, and that means the 2nd Annual "Planting HOPE in the 'Boro" 5K run is only weeks away! Through the kindness of our runners and business partners, we are able to help so many people. By signing up to be a runner, you help us to "Plant HOPE in the 'Boro" too!

People run for different reasons. Some run because it makes them feel better, some run to stay in shape and some run to work off stress. These are all good reasons, but wouldn't it be great if you could run for HOPE? Wouldn't it be great to know that each slap of your shoe on the pavement is an action that reverberates throughout Murfreesboro to change a person's life?

When you register to run at Active.com, you are helping improve someone's life. By simply doing something you love, you are a part of the help that lifts a person out of the quagmire they may be stuck in, and sets them on a new path.

Registration is $20 in advance, and registration the day of the race is $25. Pre-registration guarantees a shirt from the event, and registering the day of cannot guarantee a shirt.

We would love for you to sign up to run in our 5K! It's okay if you don't think you could do the run, too! We have a Family Fun 1-Mile walk for those not up to running the 5K, and there will be fun activities, entertainment, and prizes too! Run for HOPE and know that you are making a difference!

Here at Greenhouse Ministries, we are blessed with so many wonderful volunteers. Smiling and cheerful, they brighten the atmosphere around them, and just help out so much.

We need volunteers to help us with our "Day of Hope" in order to make it a success. Golf Tournament Details

Greenhouse Ministries' and HobNob Murfreesboro's Golf Tournament/4-person scramble offers so many opportunites for Rutherford County residents (and others!) to help their community. You can play the tournament and purchase mulligans for use in the tournament, or sponsor a hole on the course.

The tournament, held at Champions Run Golf Course in Rockvale, 14262 Mt. Pleasant Rd, features an 18-hole course on Bermuda grass, with a slope rating of 123. Teams can register for $80 per player, and the deadline for registration is June 6. Registration is available online at HobNob Murfreesboro's Web site. Businesses or individuals can also sponsor a hole on the course for $100 per hole, also available online.

Those competing in the tournament can purchase mulligans for use in the tournament. One mulligan is $5, while three mulligans are $10.

Teams in first, second and third places will receive team prizes. There will also be door prizes for things like longest drive, and a putting contest. Winnings from the putting contest will be divided 50/50 between the winner and Greenhouse Ministries.

Pre-registration for the race is $2o. And you know what's absolutely fantastic about pre-registering?! (Besides the fact that you are all set waaaay ahead of time!) Things are gearing up for the 2nd annual "Day of Hope"! June 27 is rapidly approaching and we're all very excited about this year's new Golf Tournament/Four-person scramble!

Last year's introduction of the 5K run and Family Fun walk was a success. We had so many wonderful people sign up, and we hope to have so many more this year! The 5K run begins at the Oaklands Pavilion in Murfreesboro (900 Maney Ave.). Kids who haven't quite reached the 5K mark yet can participate in the 1-mile Family Fun Walk, guaranteeing fun for the whole family. To pre-register for the run, you can visit Active.com. You can also register at the actual event itself, so no matter what, you can begin "Planting HOPE in the 'Boro" with us.

This year introduces the Golf Tournament/Four-Person Scramble. Not sure what a scramble is? Here's a short definition from About.com: The Scramble is one of the primary forms of tournament play for golf associations, charity events and the like. A scramble is usually played with 4-person teams, but 2-person scrambles are popular, too. At a 2-person scramble, handicaps are usually applied; at a 4-person scramble, handicaps are usually not applied. You can visit the above Web site for a full definition and explanation. The tournament will be held at Champion's Run Golf Course (14262 Mt. Pleasant Rd, Rockvale, TN 37153). Lunch is served at 12:30 with tee time at 1:30 p.m. Cost of registration is $80 per person. Delbert and Doris* were sent to us by Community Helpers to help them with setting up a budget and spending plan. The second session was just before Thanksgiving and I asked them if they could use some food. Bethel Church collected money for 60 turkeys so we were able to include a turkey in the food bags.

They returned for the next budgeting session after Thanksgiving. Here is the story she shared with me. Doris* called her mom, who was on disability, and two uncles and their families and told them she had a turkey, why didn’t they fix something that would go with it for Thanksgiving. They met at her mom’s house and put all of their food together. She said they had a great time and that it was the first time that had been together for a holiday or a meal in years. With tears in her eyes she said, “If you had not helped us with the turkey none of this would have happened. Thank you so much for making our Thanksgiving special this year Can I give you a hug?”

Thank you for making life special for so many people in our community by your support of Greenhouse Ministries. You allow us to give HOPE in the name of Jesus to many like “Delbert and Doris.”*

When Cliff Sharp retired from his position as teacher and coach at the University 20 years ago, he and his wife, Jane, moved to Murfreesboro, Tenn. There, the Sharps became engaged in a new ministry as Cliff directed a crisis pregnancy center. Through this work, the couple began to see an even greater need in the community.
"We noticed that single moms and the working poor were being missed," says Cliff. "Jane and I wanted to lift their hopes and serve their physical needs, but also their spiritual and emotional needs."
Thus began Greenhouse Ministries, a faith-based, volunteer organization dedicated to providing encouragement and motivation to members of the community who need to make changes in their lives; promoting wholeness; and giving back to others in the community. The Sharps serve as executive directors.
Many families come to Greenhouse for necessities such as food, gas vouchers, and furniture. There is no qualifying, and all services are free. However, clients don't just get a hand-out. To receive furniture or a computer, an individual must first engage in some form of community service- from mowing lawns, to picking up trash, or even volunteering at the ministry. It is not uncommon to meet a volunteer who was once a client.
But Greenhouse, now in its 10th year, provides more than material items; more than 60 volunteers offer resources to help citizens improve their lives. Services available include computer classes, GED tutoring, counseling, budgeting classes, literacy tutoring, relationship classes, job and housing referrals, home repairs, and many forms of advocacy. Last year alone, more than 11,000 individuals received help.
Above all, every person who comes through the door is given the opportunity to pray with the staff and volunteers. "The people who we see...most of them do not have a church home. I do weddings and funerals all because people have nobody else," says Cliff. "While we do whatever we can do to help [materially], we want to make sure there is a spiritual component.
"We have had more fun in this ministry," he adds. "When you feel like you are where God wants you to be, you have a lot of joy. We want to give everyone a touch of Jesus who comes here."

"I have no place to sleep tonight." "My husband/boyfriend left me and the children and I have to move." "I lost my job and can not pay my rent." "We finally saved enough money to get into an apartment but we have no furniture." "I lost my food stamps." "I am sleeping on the floor. Do you have a bed?" "I just got out of jail, and no one wants to hire me." "I have a new baby and need a refrigerator." "I am looking for a job." "My car was repossessed and I can't get to work." "What time do you give out food." "My wife was very ill. I had to quit work to take care of her because we have no family." "I am glad my husband finally went to rehab, but now we can not pay our bills."

These were among the calls we received this week. I never cease to be amazed at the problems that people face. I have compassion, but cannot fully empathize since I have never been in these situations. After I step back and look at the situations, it reminds me to be extremely thankful to God for the blessings Jane and I received, from being raised in families that instilled responsibility and choices based on the principles of our heavenly Father.
Most of these situations we encounter at Greenhouse Ministries spring out of poor choices and a lack of responsibility. But this does not change the fact that they all need help. We want to give physical help so they can see beyond their problem, and then spiritual help to direct them in making better choices and then take responsibility for their actions.
It is interesting that in Jesus' parable of the sower, much of the seed seemed to be wasted. Some fell on hard ground, some on the rocks, some in the thorns, and some on good soil; however, three out of the four did not produce.

At Greenhouse Ministries our mandate is to sow seed that will grow into the abundant life that Jesus desires all of us to experience. Our job is to sow. Sometime it is difficult to tell which soil will be productive in the people who call on us for help. But that is not our part, only to give each day to being available for what He sends our way.

Please pray that God will give us the wisdom, mercy and grace to not prejudge people who need help. They need to see the love of Jesus in a practical way so that the hardened soil of their heart will be receptive to seed that is sown.

Getting ready for Songwriters' Night

As Songwriters' Night is fast approaching we are getting everything ready for a wonderful evening of music. Currently I am focusing on getting desserts to serve at the show. Currently we have desserts from O'Charleys, Through the Grapevine, Sweet Spot Bakery, Mimi's Cafe and Roma's Macaroni Grill, Toot's and Red Lobster. YUM!!! Also, I want to say thanks to Foodlion for donating plates, napkins, forks and cups and to Target for donating a gift card to assist in purchase other things needed for the event.

Greenhouse Classes

Here at the Greenhouse we offer different classes for our clients.

Here is a short description of the classes we offer:

Computer 1- Tuesdays at 10am.
Computer 1- Thursday at 5pm.
Computer 2- Thursday at 6:30pm.
All computer classes meet weekly for a six week period. If a client attends all six classes they will recieve a free refurbished computer.

Bugeting- This class meets for weekly for a four week period.

GED Tutoring and Reading are both ongoing classes until the student is ready for the next step.

Career advancement, Relational Skills, Bible, Marriage Counseling, Parenting, Drug/Alcohol Rehab and Learning English courses meet for a four to six week period. These classes are offered when we have a teacher available and there is a demand from clients for the class.

Wellspring Program

Our Wellspring Program has begun! We are able to house six men currently! Praise the Lord with us for His provision of housing for these men who are looking for a fresh start!

A large part of the Wellspring Program is life and career advancement classes. The men will participate in computer classes, Victorious Living studies, cooking classes, budget counseling, and career advancement. These classes will be held weekly at Greenhouse Ministries.

We are looking for teachers and mentors for the Wellspring Program. As they are working towards a better life, these men need encouragement along their walk. Would you consider investing into their lives as a teacher or mentor?

Mentor: A trusted friend, counselor, or teacher, usually a more experienced person who acts as a guide in order to offer a good example and advice as the student advances.

Backpack Project at Greenhouse

Join with Greenhouse Ministries and the Inline Minister's Network as we provide backpacks to children in Rutherford County. This is our ninth year of participating in this project! Here's some way you can participate: prayer for students and teachers as they head back to school, volunteer to give out backpacks on the assigned days at Greenhouse Ministries and/or purchase supplies for backpacks.

Wide-Ruled Notebook Paper
Boxes of Kleenex
Spiral Notebooks
1 1/2' Binders
Subject Dividers.
